In most cases, our treatment plan includes a series of PACT treatments, a form of photodynamic therapy. First we thin the fungal nail and roughen its surface, completely painlessly. Then we clean the nail with alcohol and apply a special blue gel, which soaks in for ten minutes. After that, we place a lamp with red LED light on the nail, which activates the gel. This creates singlet oxygen, which is more than a hundred times more active than radical oxygen and damages the cell wall of the fungus.
We carry out the treatment three times within ten days. A fourth treatment follows after a month. In the end, the affected nail grows out and a new nail takes its place.

PACT therapy in brief
PACT therapy (a form of photodynamic therapy) is a treatment for fungal nails with light, without medicines. First we thin the affected nail and roughen its surface. Then we apply a gel with the light-sensitive dye toluidine blue, which soaks in for 10 minutes. After that, we place a PACT lamp with red LED light on the nail. The light activates the dye, which creates singlet oxygen. In laboratory research at the University of Tübingen, PACT slowed the growth of the fungal nail fungus Trichophyton rubrum in a nail model. The researchers call the results promising and still want to confirm them in studies with patients. At tiptoe, a light infection usually takes 4 treatments: three within ten days and a fourth after a month. A treatment costs from €38.50 for 1 nail.
How PACT treatment works
Before we start the PACT treatment, we file the affected nail and roughen its surface. Then we apply a gel to the nail with a light-sensitive dye (the photosensitiser toluidine blue). It soaks in for 10 minutes, after which we place a special PACT lamp with red LED light on the nail. The specific wavelength of this light activates the blue dye in the gel, which creates singlet oxygen. This is more than 100 times more active than radical oxygen and damages the cell wall of the fungus. We carry out this treatment three times within ten days. The fourth treatment follows after a month.

Prevention matters too: after swimming, clean your feet with a foot spray, boil your nail clippers and only use breathable nail polish.
